If you are anything like me, and I bet you are, your skin is so oily that when the sun shines on it, the reflection actually blinds people.
Since I was a teen I’ve been testing out, and soon after throwing out, skincare products for oily skin. The problem is that the new product always works great for a few hours, then things start to get really greasy really quickly, and my entire T-zone looks more like a well oiled frying pan than healthy skin.
I have learned there is a way to clean that pan permanently.
After I started writing for you guys, I got really, really, deep into the causes of oily skin. I tried out all of the «oily skin remedies», creams, masks, scrubs, you name it, everything between heaven and earth. Now, I have finally found our answer. It really made this journey back and forth between the pharmacy, the health store, and the honey & baking soda isle in the supermarket totally worth it.
How to Get Healthy Skin
To help you get to the bottom of this, I first have to tell you that all skin has a layer of oil on top. This oil is called sebum, our skin produces it. Without this oil on top of our skin, all kinds of bad things would happen: The skin would become dehydrated, and be more open to infection & viruses.
The only real difference between our oily skin and other peoples skin, is that they have a lower amount of sebum on their skin, making it much less visible. Then there are those with dry skin, but that’s a topic for another day.
Now, the reason we produce so much sebum, is that our bodies have too little essential fatty acids. These essential fatty acids are very powerful anti-inflammatory agents. Especially one in particular, Linoleic Acid, is very important. Sebum made with Linoleic Acid is calming to the skin and follicles. It also relives pain and will minimize scarring.
Needless to say, it plays a very large part in keeping our skin healthy.
So What Happens When the Skin Produces Oil Without Linoleic Acid?
Well, to put it as simple as possible, our skin starts producing a lot of oil. This is to try to compensate for the lack of Linoleic Acid in the oil it produces.
This of course, leaves our face looking like a well polished car.
Then there is our enemy: Oleic Acid. This acid is what your sebum probably uses as it’s main ingredient today. The big problem with Oleic Acid is that it is much more compact, and will easily clog your pores. This is the main reason you probably have acne & blackhead problems today.
Do you want to know something funny?
Most of the skincare products you are using right now actually contains a lot of Oleic Acid. Yes, you heard me right. The Oleic Acid in your skincare products is actually hurting your skin right now.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why oil-free skincare products will never fix your skin problems.
I hope you see where I am going with all of this. We need to replace the skincare products high in Oleic Acid, with skincare products that are both high in Linoleic Acid, and low in Oleic Acid.
And here is some good news, it looks like you need them: Most of your current skincare products, which is high in Oleic Acid, is most likely expensive products you bought from a pharmacy, or in the beauty shop at your local mall. To use products high in Linoleic Acid, we have a lot of options to choose from, all from natural sources. The best part? They are a lot cheaper than the ones you’ve been using!
Bellow I have listed my two favourite oils. If there is interest, I will write about more alternatives. For now either of these two are a great place to start:
- Hempseed Oil This is my favourite! It contains 56% Linoleic Acid plus some other essential fatty acids, and only 10% Oleic Acid. Hempseed oil is incredibly softening & moisturizing.
- Evening Primrose Oil is great if you have really oily skin. it contains 74% Linoleic Acid plus some other EFAs, with only 7% Oleic Acid. Go for this one in the start if you have really oily skin, and problems with clogged pores.
So, go ahead and throw out your oil-free skincare products, and switch to one of these. You will see great improvements in your skin.
